Common Traumatic Brain Injuries

A brain injury can be caused by a number of factors including stroke, chemical exposure, oxygen deprivation, trauma, and infectious diseases. However, when the damage to the brain is the result of a physical force or impact, it is termed a traumatic brain injury or TBI. All too often, a TBI is caused by another person’s careless or reckless conduct. In cases of reckless conduct, it’s important to consider brain injury legal services.

Traumatic brain injuries may result from car accidents, falls, sports, and accidents involving explosions. Brain injuries can have devastating consequences. Doctors often are unable to predict the full extent of the brain injury even after a diagnosis is made.

Traumatic brain injuries can produce any of the following impairments:

  • Altered/diminished consciousness
  • Impairment of thought processes
  • Behavioral and emotional disturbances, including mood swings
  • Physical limitations
  • Emotional disorders.

The impairments caused by brain injury can be temporary or permanent, depending on the type of injury and how the individual responds to treatment.

It is not always immediately apparent that someone suffered a brain injury in an accident. Symptoms of brain injury that should be watched for include:

  • Unconsciousness
  • Loss of memory of the accident that brought on the brain injury
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Blurry vision
  • Dizziness
  • Headaches
  • Memory difficulties
  • Confusion and disorientation

Traumatic Brain Injuries From Accidents

Many types of accidents can cause TBIs but falls are the leading cause among all age groups. Persons aged 75 and older have the highest rate of TBI resulting from falls and the highest likelihood to suffer a fatal brain injury.
Doctors categorize traumatic brain injury into three categories: mild, moderate, and severe.

  • Mild TBI includes a brief loss of consciousness of a few seconds or minutes, amnesia of less than a half an hour.
  • Moderate TBI may include unconsciousness for up to one day, up to 24 hours of amnesia and some abnormal imaging results.
  • Severe TBI includes loss of consciousness or coma for more than 24 hours, a corresponding length of amnesia and abnormal brain scan results.

Traumatic Brain Injuries In Children

It is extremely important to understand how brain injuries can affect children and what look for in a child that has suffered a head impact. Children may not tell you that an accident has occurred and may not understand the danger that they are in.

According the Centers for Disease Control, brain injury kills 3,000 children and youths every year and hospitalizes an additional 29,000. The top age groups most at risk for brain injury include those less than four years of age and teens aged 15 to 19.

A Brain in Pain or Distress

According to the Brain Injury Association of America, 62,000 children aged newborn to 19 sustain brain injuries that require hospitalization every year. These are commonly the result of motor vehicle crashes, falls, sports, injuries and physical abuse. Among children aged newborn to 14, TBI resulted in an estimated 2,685 deaths, 37,000 hospitalizations and 435,000 emergency department visits.

It is important to be able to recognize the following types of impairments. Characteristically, a child may exhibit the following as the result of a possible brain injury:

  • Will not stop crying
  • Loses consciousness even if only for a brief period
  • Vomits after injury
  • Difficult to rouse and seems to not fully awaken
  • Walking or talking differently than normal
  • Complains of neck pain or pain in the head (if your child is nonverbal this may be difficult to discern)

Brain Injury Lawyer

If your child exhibits any of the above symptoms, you must call a doctor on an immediate basis. If your child is not an infant, has not lost consciousness and is behaving normally, it is still important to watch the child for the next 24 hours for any signs of brain injury. If your child falls asleep, wake them up soon afterwards to ensure that they are behaving normally, and are not abnormally drowsy after being awakened.

If you ever have any concerns or doubts as to whether your child has suffered a brain injury, take your child to the emergency room at a hospital immediately.
