What Should You Do After A Car Wreck?

Assemble A Kit

Being prepared can make a difference in your accident case. Keep a kit in your car that includes basic medical supplies, pen and paper, a disposable camera, and medical alert cards. Don’t forget to clip and include this article in your kit.

Assess the Situation

Check to see if you or your passengers are injured, then determine whether it is safe for you to exit your vehicle.

Call the Police

Dial 9-1-1 immediately if anyone is injured. You must call the police even if the accident is minor. Do not leave until they arrive.

Move Out of Harm’s Way

If your vehicle has minor damage and it is safe to do so, move your car out of traffic.

Get Evidence

Take photos of vehicle damage and the accident scene if it is safe to do so.

Exchange Information

Be sure to get the other driver’s name, address, phone number, license plate number, driver’s license number, and insurance information. If there were witnesses, you may also ask for their name, phone number, and address.

Speak With the Police

When the police arrive, you should honestly report only the facts of what happened.

Seek Medical Attention

If you were injured, seek medical attention as soon as possible, even if you think it’s minor. Report all of your symptoms and document the details of your appointment.
