Richard J. Arsenault and Trial Team Wins $9 Billion

After an 11-week trial, a Louisiana jury rendered a historic verdict: $9 billion in punitive damages against Eli Lilly and Takeda Pharmaceuticals over claims that taking Actos increases bladder cancer risks. Richard J. Arsenault, along with co-trial counsel W. Mark Lanier and Paul J. Pennock, represented a New York man and his wife in the first federal Bellwether Trial. The award, one of the nation’s largest personal injury verdicts, is the first of nearly 3,000 lawsuits consolidated before Judge Rebecca Doherty.
