Worldwide Recall of DePuy Orthopedics ASR Hip Implant Systems

On August 24, 2010, DePuy Orthopedics, a division of Johnson & Johnson, issued a worldwide recall of 93,000 ASR™ Hip Resurfacing Systems and ASR™ XL Acetabular Systems.

DePuy reported that 12% of patients implanted with ASR™ Hip Resurfacing System experience hip implant failure and require revision surgery.  13% of patients implanted with ASR™ XL Acetabular System experience failures that require revision surgery.  This is a higher-than-expected failure rate for these hip replacement systems. The recalled hip implant products feature metal-on-metal contact, which creates the risk of metal shavings entering and damaging surrounding tissue, as well as,  compromising the success of revision surgeries.

According to the Associated Press, 1 in 8 patients implanted with one of the recalled hip implant products will require a second surgery within 5 years.

Signs and Symptoms of Hip Replacement Failure

  • Component loosening
  •
  • Component malalignment
  •
  • Infection
  •
  • Fracture of the bone
  •
  • Dislocation
  •
  • Metal sensitivity and pain
  •
  • Pain when walking in the hip, thigh or groin
  •
  • Loss of mobility
  •
  • Some patients may develop progressive soft tissue reactions to metal wear debris. The debris can cause soft tissue damage which may compromise the results of the revision surgery.

Lawsuit Filed on Behalf of Defective Hip Implant Victim

Neblett, Beard & Arsenault has filed a lawsuit in the United States District Court, Eastern District of Louisiana, on behalf of an elderly victim who was implanted with a recalled DePuy hip replacement system. The lawsuit, which names DePuy and Johnson & Johnson, allege that ASR Hip systems are prone to fail within approximately two years of implantation despite the fact that such hip implant devices are supposed to last more than fifteen years.  Further, the suit alleges that the implant’s metal “ball” and “socket” bearings that make up the hip-joint generate metal debris over time from wear and tear that can spread throughout the patient’s surrounding bone and tissue.  As a result of these defects, patients that have had the devices implanted have endured, or will endure, unnecessary pain and suffering; debilitating lack of mobility; inflammation causing damage or death to surrounding tissue and bone; and a subsequent more difficult revision surgery to replace the faulty devices giving rise to more debilitation, a prolonged recovery time, and an increased risk of complications and death from surgery.  Click here for a copy of the lawsuit.
