Imprelis, which DuPont has marketed as a more environmentally friendly herbicide, was conditionally approved for use last year by the EPA. Imprelis is currently sold in all U.S. states, except for New York and California, and has experienced widespread use. Reports of tree deaths began to surface in the Spring of 2011, and have prompted DuPont to investigate alleged reports of tree damage and death. The tree deaths have also gotten the attention of the EPA. According to news reports, the EPA is taking the Imprelis claims "very seriously" and will begin an "expedited review" to determine if any changes in the use of Imprelis are needed.
Despite growing concerns over a possible link between Imprelis use and tree deaths, DuPont is continuing to sell Imprelis. However, in a letter to Imprelis customers dated June 16, 2011, DuPont encourages customers not apply Imprelis to land where the treatment spray, drift or runoff may contact certain trees, shrubs or other desirable plants, as a precaution while its investigation continues.
Imprelis Herbicide Linked to Tree Death
Imprelis has been advertised as "the most advanced turf herbicide in over 40 years." It is used against stubborn, broadleaf weeds including clover and dandelions, and has been touted as being more environmentally friendly than its predecessors.
The active ingredient in Imprelis is Aminocyclopyrachlor. Aminocyclopyrachlor is non-volatile, highly soluble in water, environmentally persistent and highly mobile in soils. Due to its high mobility, this product has label advisories for surface and groundwater contamination.
Aminocyclopyrachlor is in the chemical class of the pyrimidine carboxylic acids, which is similar to pyridine carboxylic acid herbicides such as aminopyralid, clopyralid, and picloram. These chemicals have had repeated incidents where treated plant residues contaminated non-target plants. These chemicals persist in the environment, and do not break down during composting. Some states as well as the United Kingdom were prompted to take regulatory action due to these incidents.
Some Imprelis victims have claimed that after the application of Imprelis, they experienced sudden and disastrous side effects on non-targeted trees. According to reports, problems include tree death and tree damage that includes the significant browning of tree tips and drastic loss of leaves. In some cases, area’s biggest and oldest tree have died, causing thousands of dollars in damages and years of lost growth.
The EPA has received complaints linking Imprelis to tree death and tree damage in Minnesota, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and West Virginia. However, tree deaths and damages may be more widespread.
