Chalmette Refinery Releases One Ton of Refining Chemical
Although officials at Chalmette Refinery downplayed the environmental risk of the catalyst, a Material Safety Data Sheet states the catalyst powder can be an irritant to the eyes and skin if inhaled or ingested and urges people to use rubber gloves while handling the product. The data sheet also encourages individuals to decontaminate or dispose of clothing items, shoes, etc. exposed to the catalyst powder.
Catalyst powder contains kaolin, a clay-like substance, and amounts of more hazardous ingredients, including titanium oxide. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) lists spent catalysts as a hazardous waste which must be disposed of under strict guidelines.
Areas Affected by Chalmette Refinery Chemical Release
The St. Bernard Parish Fire Department mapped the areas affected by the catalyst release. Catalyst powder coated properties in Chalmette, Arabi and the Lower Ninth Ward. The area includes the eastern sections of Arabi, east to Paris Road and north up to Genie Street.
Potential Health Affects from Catalyst Exposure
The spent catalyst powder is a hazardous and harmful substance. The substance is especially dangerous to those who suffer from respiratory illnesses or chronic conditions. The powder can cause injury when inhaled or contacted by victims, and is a known eye and skin irritant. Exposure may also cause respiratory conditions. Those exposed to the catalyst powder may require medical treatment.
